Poetry and Poetics Cluster
Description
The Poetry and Poetics cluster at the University of Glasgow comprises a group of poets who teach poetry as both a creative practice and a historical phenomenon of literary and artistic cultural production across the centuries in Scotland and beyond.
The poets' work encompasses areas such as Creative Writing, Scottish Literature, and English Literature, but it also has an outward-facing approach. It aims to engage not only dedicated poets, professional scholars, and critics, but also anyone who appreciates reading, visual arts, music, performing arts in all its diverse forms, and broader inquiries into various subjects.
Furthermore, the cluster is dedicated to poetry as a means of intellectual, emotional, and linguistic exploration and interpretation. This commitment is evident in the research and scholarly investigations undertaken through creative practice, as demonstrated in The Hunterian Poems and The Hunterian Museum Poems anthologies. In these anthologies, a range of poets respond to paintings held in The Hunterian Gallery, or objects found in The Hunterian Museum, including natural and humanly-engineered artifacts. A second anthology is curated by staff and artists, who reflect upon and raise questions about the methods and structures of understanding that transcend the boundaries of arts and sciences.
In addition to their academic pursuits, the poets of the cluster are actively engaged in teaching creative writing at the University of Glasgow, as well as participating in public events, readings, exhibitions, performances, lectures, and talks at other academic institutions and festivals across Scotland and internationally.
