The Centre's mission is to lead the advancement and coordination of excellence in Robert Burns Studies, both in the UK and internationally, through various initiatives.
The centre’ aims are:
- To spearhead the development and coordination of research of outstanding quality in the field of Robert Burns Studies, both nationally and globally.
- To promote Robert Burns Studies through publications, seminar series, colloquia, conferences, performance events, and other gatherings, both in the UK and internationally.
- To cultivate collaborations with other institutions specializing in Robert Burns Studies and housing significant collections of Burns material.
- To establish and maintain a center of excellence in postgraduate studies and early career research in Robert Burns Studies.
- To expand interest in Robert Burns Studies by inviting visiting lecturers and fostering academic and student exchanges within the UK and worldwide.
The Centre for Robert Burns Studies, in alignment with the University of Glasgow's vision of 'world-changing' contributions, has been actively engaged in several research projects related to Burns, his life, works, cultural period, and related literature since its inception in 2007. Notable projects include the AHRC-funded 'Editing Robert Burns for the 21st Century', which is the flagship research project of the Centre, as well as the groundbreaking study commissioned by the Scottish Government, 'Robert Burns in the Scottish Economy', and the AHRC-funded multi-volume edition of 'The Collected Works of Allan Ramsay'. The Centre also supports smaller networks and encourages collaborative and independent research projects by its staff on Burns's literary, cultural, historical, and political contexts.
As a global network, the Centre for Robert Burns Studies has established connections with an active community of international scholars and has welcomed visiting scholars from various countries, including the USA, Slovenia, and Czechia, among others. Locally, the Centre provides financial assistance for Masters-level research through the Shaw Scholarship and offers direct supervision of postgraduate research projects, as well as support for early career research, to a number of postgraduate students working on Robert Burns. In line with the Centre's aim to broaden interest in Burns, online courses are offered to all, allowing for further exploration into the life and works of Robert Burns.
The Centre has also fostered Robert Burns Studies through a diverse range of public engagement events, including conferences, high-profile performance events, and seminar series. Annual events, such as Burns Night at the Museum and the Centre for Robert Burns Studies Annual Conference, bring together audience members from academia and beyond, creating a vibrant platform for scholarly discourse and dissemination of knowledge.
