Centre for Medieval Studies, Exeter
Description
The Centre for Medieval Studies is home to excellent interdisciplinary graduate training and research into most aspects of the medieval world. It brings together a lively graduate community with one of the largest concentrations of medievalists in the United Kingdom, with over 25 staff from 9 different disciplines: Archaeology, Art History and Visual Culture, Classics, English, Modern Languages and Cultures, History, Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies and Theology.
The staff’s research expertise ensures the Centre combines wide chronological range with geographical breadth in both teaching and research. Working together members range from Late Antiquity through the early Middle Ages, to the Central and Later Middle Ages. They cover not only British and European medieval history and culture but also that of the Near and Middle East. Much of the research is interdisciplinary.
Situated in the medieval city of Exeter, the Centre enjoys easy access to an excellent range of medieval holdings from across the South West for use in both graduate training and research. The wider South West region also offers unrivalled opportunities to explore not only its archaelogy, landscape and architectural histories, but also the myths and stories associated with particular sites.
The Centre hosts a regular seminar in termtime, as well as a full programme of research workshops and conferences aimed at both scholars and graduate students.
