Language Variation, Identity and Interaction
Description
This cluster focuses on how language is used to do things with words: how distinct identities are constructed through language, how relationships are formed and maintained, and how both verbal and non-verbal communication are used to build actions and social institutions together. The cluster investigates language from the perspective of: linguistic variation and change, particularly regional varieties of British English and modern Arabic dialects; conversation analysis, particularly grammar and embodiment in interaction, and second language acquisition, particularly first language attrition.
