Victorian Studies Centre
Description
The Victorian Studies Centre at the University of Leicester is the oldest established Victorian Studies Centre in Britain, having been established in 1966 with funding from the Leverhulme Trust. Today, the Centre's research and teaching staff are drawn from English, History, History of Art and Film, and History of Science and Museum Studies.
The Centre has expanded over the years to encompass more colleagues and disciplines, working to explore new aspects of Victorian culture and its legacies while setting the highest standards in research and teaching. The Centre maintains its ethos of interdisciplinary research and collaboration, engaging with postgraduate research students, Masters students, and international visiting Fellows to provide groundbreaking directions for Victorian Studies worldwide.
The Centre is an inclusive community that values the exchange of ideas and work in practice, through seminars, conferences, and collegiality. The Centre also engages with the wider community, welcoming scholars and Leicester residents to all events and valuing its location within the 19th-century city and region. In furthering the engagement between the different disciplines of the Centre, the Victorian Studies Centre aims to appreciate what the Victorians mean for Britain in the 21st century, and how their legacies can be understood from a global perspective. The Centre's collaborations with scholars from all over the world have positioned it to develop the internationalisation of Victorian studies and benefit from symbiotic relationships that contribute to a better understanding of the newly emerging dimensions of Victorian studies.
