Language in Context (LinC)

Description

Language in context (LinC) studies how the social, interpersonal, and discursive context of language shapes its forms and uses.

Members welcome discussion of topics in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and stylistics. Research topics include language ideologies, language and identity, language shift, attitudes to language, discourse analysis, and language contact.

They see the communicative and symbolic functions of language variation and use as fundamental to, not adjuncts to, a comprehensive theory of human linguistic production and comprehension. They believe that quantitative and qualitative methods complement each other in the study of linguistics, and they encourage research that explores productive ways of combining these types of data.

They equally encourage research connecting descriptions of actual language use with theoretical approaches in linguistics and related disciplines.

The Language in Context seminars are fortnightly meetings at which members discuss language in its many guises and in the multifarious contexts in which it is used. Members are primarily concerned with the various ways in which language influences and is influenced by the structural, discursive, socio-political, institutional or interpersonal environments in which they exist. They welcome research from the field of Applied Linguistics but also any other relevant fields including Modern Languages and Cultures, Historical Language Studies, Education, Sociology (of Language), Linguistic Anthropology, Psychology, Philosophy and others. Potential seminar topics could include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Language Attitudes and Ideologies
  • Language Endangerment, Shift and Death
  • Minority Languages and Cultures
  • Language Policy and Politics
  • Language Revitalisation
  • Language and Identity
  • Discourse Analysis
  • Corpus Linguistics
  • Bi/Multilingualism
  • Language Education
  • Translation Studies
  • Historical Sociolinguistics
