History and Games Lab (H&GL)
Description
The History and Games Lab (H&GL) explores games (both analog and digital) as a medium for historical research, teaching, and public understanding of history. It aims to study how games represent history, but also to translate history into game design by bringing historians and game designers together for creative and commercial projects.
The Lab’s activities include events such as regular seminars, podcasts, workshops, game design, playtests, and participation at gaming events. The H&GL is based at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology of the University of Edinburgh, but members encourage contributions from other disciplines and backgrounds, within and without the university, and from the games world in general (see the Join, Study, and Collaborate sections of this website). The H&GL strives to take an inclusive, collaborative and interdisciplinary approach.
H&GL is also home to the History and Games Society, a student group focusing on fostering a university community and introducing students to the world of game design.
