Global Contemporary Research Group
Description
Based at the School of History of Art at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), the Global Contemporary Research Group examines the impact of globalisation on art, theory and curating.
The Global Contemporary Research Group acts as a forum in which the diverse research of its membership is brought into conversation, and as a platform for a year-round programme of public events on the intersections of art and globalisation.
Research engages a range of topics connected to globalisation, including:
- art and capitalism;
- the art and visual culture of biopolitics;
- modernity and contemporaneity;
- urban contexts and the creative industries;
- art institutions and labour;
- feminism and sexual politics;
- the environment and social reproduction;
- technology and networks;
- democracy and neo-fascism.
Staff affiliated to the research group supervise students at all levels, including a wide range of doctoral research projects on subjects ranging from contemporary technology and visual cultures, to figurations of the border.
The research group runs a programme of activities as part of an exciting research environment for students and staff. It meets normally once per academic term to discuss developments in scholarship across the core themes. The group welcomes staff and students from across the University with an interest in the subject.
