Acoustics and Audio Group

Description

The Acoustics and Audio Group at the University of Edinburgh currently consists of ten academic staff. It has members and associations across the University, with particular presence in the School of Music, the School of Physics and Astronomy, the School of Engineering, the School of Mathematics and St. Cecilia’s Museum of Historical Musical Instruments. Through its simulation work, the Centre has collaborated closely with EPCC.

Members work on problems in musical and room acoustics, computational acoustics, spatial audio, virtual analog audio effect modelling and micromechanical microphone design.

The Group has hosted various large research projects including Next Generation Sound Synthesis (NESS) (ERC), BATWOMAN (Marie Curie ITN), GMAAT (EPSRC) and WRAM (ERC), and have had staff members supported by the Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust.

The Group has UK-wide associations with the Open University, the University of York’s Audio Lab, the University of Durham, the University of Stirling, the Sonic Arts Research Centre and the University of Cambridge. The AAG is a member of the UK Acoustics Network (UKAN).

International research links include LAUM (University of le Mans, Acoustics Lab), IRCAM, Aalborg University Copenhagen, Chalmers University of Technology, and Aalto University of Technology.

An important part of the Acoustics and Audio Group is the MSc in Acoustics and Music Technology. This exciting one-year taught Masters degree provides a broad-based foundation in the technical, practical and musical applications of acoustics and audio technology. The program has run successfully since 2006, with a high proportion of graduates now working as research postgraduates, or in the commercial acoustics sector.

A regular seminar series is jointly hosted by the Acoustics and Audio Group (on behalf of the School of Music) and the School of Informatics. There is a website for the series, including a video archive of past seminars.
