Design Office
Description
Design Office is a design research consultancy. We take a research-led approach to architectural and urban design. We produce design projects informed by the latest research, also helping the university to transfer knowledge and engage research with the wider world.
Design Office's expertise goes beyond the reach of conventional architectural and urban design consultancies. We facilitate research-led design solutions, often including participatory workshops with stakeholders. Our associates are experienced at working in difficult and unusual contexts, and in response to special challenges, for clients and collaborators.
Our projects so far have drawn from our research expertise in low carbon design, heritage, conservation and participatory design. They include, for example: a UK Government funded study examining how to integrate renewable technologies into the historic fabric of Hexham Abbey; a design for creating arts incubators and exhibition spaces in the former Woolworths store in Gateshead; and research-informed designs for a £25m. refurbishment of Newcastle University's historic Armstrong Building.
Design Office produces new knowledge through a wide range of architectural outputs including built projects, and books, academic papers, comics, collages, and social media.
Design Office regularly works in partnership with other practices. Low carbon design is an important strand of its work. The Office was included in the Architect's Journal's most recent 40 Under 40 listing of the UK's most exciting emerging architectural talent.
