The Shakespeare Institute

Description

The Shakespeare Institute is a specialist research department of the University of Birmingham, based in a historic building, Mason Croft, in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is home to eight full-time faculty members, two flourishing MA programmes, and a community of PhD students and visiting scholars, all of whom benefit from its excellent library and close relationships with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and other Shakespearean organizations and researchers around the world. (These include the National University of Singapore, with which the Institute co-teaches an online MA module on the performance of Shakespeare in Asia; Nanjing University, where it co-directs the Shakespeare Centre, China; Verona, where the Institute co-sponsors the University of Verona's 'Shakespeare and the Mediterranean' summer school; Munich, where the Institute was involved in the establishment of the Forschungsbibliothek Shakespeare Muenchen in 1964; and Montpellier, where the Institute helped shape what has become the Institut de Recherche sur la Renaissance, l'age Classique et les Lumieres).  The Institute hosts and convenes the biennial, invitation-only International Shakespeare Conference and co-organizes the annual Royal Shakespeare Company Summer School (both of them established in the late 1940s in Mason Croft, when it still belonged to the British Council).
