Bakhtin Centre
Description
The Bakhtin Centre, established in October 1994, was initially supported by the University of Sheffield's New Academic Developments Fund, Humanities Research Institute, and Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies. The Centre was designed to encourage research on the Russian philosopher and theorist, Mikhail Bakhtin, and the Bakhtin Circle, as well as related areas of cultural, critical, linguistic and literary theory.
The Centre has broadened its focus over time, extending beyond traditional Russian and Slavonic studies to encompass the evolution of cultural theories in Russia and the USSR, and related disciplines. This is evident in the Centre's projects which include a comprehensive database of work by and about the Bakhtin Circle, and the study of sociological linguistics in the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1938. The Centre also fosters research into the life and work of French thinker, Tzvetan Todorov.
Besides the research projects, the Centre facilitates discussion about the work of Bakhtin, the Bakhtin Circle, and Todorov via email news and discussion lists. The Centre possesses a significant research collection, rich in Russian and English materials. It also has both informal and formal collaborative links with researchers globally, including those at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.
From 1998 to 2001, the Centre also published 'Dialogism: An International Journal of Bakhtin Studies'.
