Centre for Ethics and Law
Description
The UCL Centre for Ethics and Law works at the interface between law and ethics.
The centre's members are particularly interested in the relationships between ethics and the professions; law, ethics and business; innovation, technology and ethics and ethics and risk. Its work draws on law, philosophy, psychology and practice.
The Centre:
- provides a focus for thought leadership
- organises a programme of events for engaging with and challenging business and professional approaches to ethics
- conducts theoretical and applied research including funded postgraduate research opportunities
- teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses with strong ethics components
Members aim to encourage ethical reflection, awareness and positive change through teaching, research and stakeholder engagement with the public, policy makers, regulators, practitioners and academics.
Through think tanks and other events the Centre brings together academics, policy makers, practitioners and business leaders to discuss ethical dilemmas in business and professional life. Through teaching and research it provides thought leadership.
Ongoing projects include:
- Corporate regulation and its legitimacy
- Ethics and financial regulation
- Ethics in professional systems
- The impact of interventions on the clients of solicitors
- The implications of the Bribery Act and the FCPA for corporate law and theory
- Understanding the ethical consciousness of legal practitioners

- A study of law students: ethics, values and attitudes to professionalism
- Company law reform in Alderney
- Ethics of behaviour change
- Mapping the moral compass of in-house lawyers
- Mitigation and fairness in contract law
- Review of legal services regulation
- The conceptualisation and management of legal risk in corporations: ethical, legal and compliance issues
