Description

The Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) is an interdisciplinary research centre that is home to postgraduate degrees in Translation and Technology (MSc) and Translation Studies (MA/Mphil/PhD) as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) short courses.

All staff are active researchers or professional translators and interpreters. The Centre’s innovative programmes reflect the latest developments in the exciting and fast-changing field of translating and interpreting.

Within its research cluster on Technology, Professional Practices and Education, the Centre treats neural machine translation systems, translation memories and terminology management tools, and more recently generative artificial intelligence and large language models, as core components of professional translation and interpreting practice and education. Its video game localisation and accessibility research includes the AIAD project (2024-2025), funded by Higher Education Innovation Funding, which explores AI-enabled audio description as a way of making video games more accessible to players with visual disabilities, and the TransAD4Games project (2023-2024), funded by the British Academy, which investigates the translation of audio description scripts for games. Researchers also examine the ethics of technology-driven crisis communication in multilingual contexts, including published work on automated processes and machine translation in crises. The Centre offers an array of translation and interpreting tools in its dedicated computer lab and fosters collaborations with industry partners, including software developers, to keep its research aligned with changing industry developments.
