Body Mind and Media Centre for Children and Young People’s Wellbeing
Description
At the Body Mind and Media Centre for Children and Young People’s Wellbeing, members aim to understand children and young people’s experiences and worlds, to improve policy and practice in media, health and medical care. Taking a children’s rights stance, members invite children, parents and others to share their views and experiences in these domains. They also examine health and media systems and policies that shape these experiences. They develop national and international research, and engage in knowledge exchange and impact activities, including education for all stakeholders.
Work in the cluster, and its rights perspective, is often complemented by an appreciative inquiry approach, a strengths-based stance that can work towards reducing moral panics of childhoods by viewing children as experts. In line with the cluster’s commitment to hearing children and young people’s views and sharing research findings, members are currently creating a set of OUR VOICES resources, drawing on The Open University’s expertise and in collaboration with the Open University sister-centre, the Children’s Research Centre. The resources consist of animations, a website and an OpenLearn free course, all of which explain why and how working with children and young people is of value in the research process.
