Centre for Research into the Education of Marginalised Children and Young Adults (CREMCYA)

Description

The Centre for Research into the Education of Marginalised Children and Young Adults (CREMCYA) has a distinct focus on the education of children and young adults who are not well-served by existing formal and traditional forms of education both in the UK and globally.

These include undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and internally displaced people, children and young people living in extreme poverty or societies affected by conflict, children and young people involved in the youth justice system or in custody, young homeless people and looked-after children (children in care), among others.

The wide-ranging and inclusive membership of CREMCYA, encompassing partnerships between academics, charities, governmental and non-governmental organisations and the business sector, provides an ideal environment to stimulate debate, influence public policy and improve professional practice.

Adhering strongly to the values of inclusivity and respect, CREMCYA serves as a focal point for scholars, practitioners and civil society to explore social justice issues from the perspective of all faiths or none.

Current research within CREMCYA focuses on:

  • young lives and youth identities
  • the sociology and political economy of education and learning within development and humanitarian contexts globally
  • state and non-state provision of education, including through the voluntary, charitable and private sectors
  • challenges faced by governmental and non-governmental organisations and communities in relation to planning and providing quality education for all
  • the socio-cultural, political and economic factors which impact young people’s access to, retention in and completion of the full education cycle
  • questions of practice at the interface of education, well-being and employment.

CREMCYA hosts the MA Education, International Development and Social Justice.

CREMCYA also welcomes MPhil/PhD students with research interests within its areas of expertise.
