Description
Film Studies is a leading centre of research in the fields of film history, film cultures and national cinemas.
Areas of expertise include the cultures and industries of British, French, Indian, Russian and US cinemas. A particular focus of the Film Cultures research group is star studies, especially in relation to questions of ageing and longevity). Other areas of research specialism include European production histories and the branding of nations and studios, transcultural and transnational film, history/historiography and film, cinema memory, the representation of war and conflict, and film festivals.
Members of the Film Cultures research group have published on stars (Gerard Depardieu, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve), directors (Sally Potter, Lynne Ramsay, Bertrand Blier, Pedro Almodovar, Carol Reed and Luis Bunuel), producers (Carlo Ponti and Alexander Korda), production companies (Film Finances) and production design (Les Miserables, An American in Paris).
Research partners include the British Library, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Lindsay Anderson Memorial Foundation. Members of Film Cultures regularly give talks at the Institut Français, the British Film Institute, the Barbican and the National Portrait Gallery.
