Jane Austen Society

Description

Established in 1940, the Society’s main aim is to foster the appreciation and study of the work, life and times of Jane Austen, and the Austen family.

The Society celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2020.  In September 2022, following a members’ vote at the July 2022 AGM, the Charity Commission registered the Society as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) under registered number 1200422.  Subsequently, the Society’s membership and assets from the original charity have all been transferred to the CIO, but its charity number 1040613, and its objects set out above remain unchanged.

The Society maintains links with Jane Austen's House Museum in Chawton and, to meet its own aims, has supported some of the Museum's educational activities.
