The Edinburgh Alwaleed Centre is committed to encouraging a better understanding of Islam and the contemporary Muslim world through ground-breaking research, dynamic teaching and innovative outreach projects.
Based in the University of Edinburgh's School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and affiliated to Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, the Alwaleed Centre is inherently interdisciplinary, connecting different schools and departments across the University of Edinburgh through its focus on contemporary Islam and the Muslim world.
Alongside its world-class research and teaching, the Alwaleed Centre has developed a reputation for delivering high-impact outreach projects, promoting a better understanding of Islam and Muslim culture locally, nationally and internationally.
The Edinburgh Alwaleed Centre is one of is one of six academic centres based at leading universities in the UK, USA and Middle East, all endowed by Alwaleed Philanthorpies.
The Centre’s research agenda engages dynamically with many dimensions of the contemporary Muslim world. It encompasses different regions of the world comprising majority and minority Muslim communities. It considers intra and inter-religious dynamics as well the global impact on states and societies of contemporary Islamic religiosity.

Muslims in Europe Research and teaching focused on Europe's second-largest religious minority with an emphasis on representation, politics and debates around multiculturalism.

Islam and Inter-religious Relations Exploring the relationship between Islam and other religious traditions, in both Muslim-majority and Muslim–minority contexts.

Sunni-Shi'i Relations Exploring the multifaceted contemporary relationship between Islam's two main sects, with a particular focus on the UK and Europe as well as other Muslim-minority contexts.

Mediterranean Islamisms A major new research project assessing the role of Islamist groups and actors in the social and political lives of Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt.

Islamic Discourses in the Middle East Exploring Islam's role in public life and its relationship with the state in a dynamic and rapidly-changing Middle East.

Alwaleed Centre Publications Over the course of its twelve-year history, the Alwaleed Centre's academic team have published over 20 monographs and edited volumes, and over 100 journal articles and chapters.
