Curational and Collaborative Practices Research Group

Description

Curational and Collaborative Practices Research Group provides a forum for research exchange between artists, academics and research students whose work addresses the limits and possibilities of curatorial and collaborative practices.

Research undertaken by group members is typified by a commitment to explore the practices, philosophies, and contextual opportunities for curatorial and collaborative forms of activity. Research output is multi-form including exhibition, scholarly publication, and creative research projects including events developed in collaboration with activists, galleries, museums, and cultural and social organisations at a regional, national and international level.

The group addresses the role of audience within curatorial or collaborative activity, embracing public engagement and knowledge exchange within the group’s diverse field of activity.

Projects undertaken include: collaborative and individual forms of fine art practice, thematic curatorial projects, and writing on contemporary art.

Research output by group members has contributed to the disciplinary fields of fine art practice, art history/visual culture, curatorial research, performance and queer studies, popular music studies and public debates about value within contemporary art.

The group emerges from existing staff research and has been strategically enhanced by recent appointments and the development of public -facilitating such as the Experimental Studio. Located in a variety of different venues, the Experimental Studio acts as the institutional locus for collaborative and curatorial practice research at Northumbria University, providing a space for cross-disciplinary researchers within and external to the university to come together, test ideas and develop a programme of discursive events.
