Film in Language Teaching Association (FILTA)
Description
Film in Language Teaching Association (FILTA) is an association of language teachers, film educators and researchers.
FILTA was formed for the purpose of providing a forum for the exchange of information related to the use of film in language teaching. Members are also concerned with issues dealing with education, instruction and training in multimodal literacy and its application to language learning.
Its aim is to work with the theoretical framework of “learning in a participatory culture” outlined in the 2006 White Paper “Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century” (Jenkins et al): encouraging online community memberships, the use of collaboration to solve problems, and the use of technology to shape the flow of media.
FILTA promotes the teaching and learning of foreign languages through film by:
- Providing information and publications.
- Creating a flexible online-learning environment that incorporates an expanding collection of materials.
- Organising professional development activities.
FILTA aims to:
- Encourage an understanding of the importance of languages and film at all levels in society.
- Promote educational research on language and film.
- Provide a forum for the views and experiences of those teaching languages through film.
- Encourage teachers to design and contribute their own related materials.
- Promote linguistic diversity and intercultural awareness.
- Advance public understanding of Media Studies and the techniques and approaches for successful application to language teaching.
- Promote improved standards of language teaching through New Literacies.
- Develop reciprocal links with other language and media education organisations and practitioners of the media industries.
- Work with schools and colleges.
- Provide opportunities for member’s professional development.
- Promote languages across and beyond the formal curriculum.
